Director
Lauren Mitchell is director of OU's Sooner Flight Academy. She received a bachelor of science degree in elementary education from the University of Southern Mississippi. She has been a classroom teacher for three years and is certified in Mississippi, Florida and Oklahoma, specializing in creating unique, hands-on learning opportunities for children of all ages. Her first year in the classroom, Mitchell received the Outstanding Teacher Award at the Earl Travillion Attendance Center and her class won the science fair two consecutive years.
Lauren is a member of the National Education Association and has been active in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. In her spare time she enjoys reading, painting and spending time with her family. Mitchell relocated to Oklahoma in 2006 with her husband, Jeffrey, a member of the U.S Air Force. They live in Moore with their dog, Lady.

Program Assistant
Dawn Machalinski is a program assistant with the Sooner Flight Academy serving as a teacher and supply coordinator. She is currently enrolled at the University of Oklahoma pursuing her bachelor’s degree. Dawn also attended the University of Maryland European Division while she lived and worked in West Germany. She homeschooled her three children for many years and is very excited to have the opportunity to work with children. An eleven-year Girl Scout veteran, she has worked as a substitute teacher for the Washington Public School System. Dawn enjoys writing, directing, and producing children’s plays.
Additional staff members are University of Oklahoma Student pilots who provide valuable knowledge and expertise in aviation. These students are excellent role models and mentors for all SFA participants. We also employ Oklahoma City area school teachers throughout the summer. These teachers provide excellent classroom management experience as well superb instructional skills.
